Focus – 5W & 1H?

We are in an era of extremes with the problem of plenty and scarcity coexisting in absolute harmony. The harmony is also a result of existential need more than anything else.  We are spoilt with the kind of choices we make while dabbling with the limitations we have set for ourselves.

In the beginning of my career I learned about the concept of 5Ws and 1H. So let us take that as a base to learn about Focus?

What is the focus?

Focus, is the ability to make a conscious choice to invest all your senses, i.e. sight, smell, sound, taste and touch; into one particular task over and over again, till you achieve desired results.

What should I focus on?

My first instinct is to say, your goals. However, I have realized that it is very ambiguous. Just focusing on goals is like walking on a tight rope. The objective definitely is to finish the walk, but unless one focuses on the next step first. Eventually, one gets so used to it that it becomes effortless.  To answer the question, one must focus on the next step, the step that takes you closer to your goal.

Why do we find it hard to stay focused?

I heard a beautiful sermon today. You practice what you become. The speaker asked, how many listeners were taught focus. There was hardly a couple in a  room full of people. This is true for everything in life. Focus is not taught and neither is a distraction. However habitually we crave distractions and end up practising it more than 60% of our day.  We practice to become distracted and distracted we become. Hence it is hard to stay focused.

How can I stay focused and be more productive at work and everyday life?

One of the challenges with focus is the magnanimity attached to it. We see the quantum of work involved and think drained out even before we start. The idea is to break the work into a small simple task. For example, if you plan to write a book, then you can start by writing one page every day.  In the nutshell, try and simplify and break down.

Where do you feel most focused?

This past few months, both students and professionals alike were yearning to join back. The reason was that any place which makes them feel like all their energies can be focused on just one task. At home, they were unable to do s0.  We normally assign a place that helps us concentrate and focus.  Find your place.

Who helps you to develop focus or stay focused?

Maintaining focus wasn’t easy for me.  My sister and husband have been great support. They  not only help me when I lose focus by reminding me of my priorities but also acting as a sounding board in times of doubt.

When do you feel most focused?

I feel most focused when I count my blessing and feel grateful for the distance I have covered in my journey towards my goal. The idea is to keep taking a stock of how far you have come, what you have learned and what are your milestones. It not acts as a motivator but increases the focusing manifold.

Through my blog today I have tried answering some questions that are often asked in the context of focus. Do let me know how you feel about them?
